Say Hello to True Brand Marine...

True Brand Marine Fuel Treatment

... and Say Goodbye to Ethanol Problems.

If there is one thing that anyone with a love of being on the water needs to know, it’s that the ethanol in modern fuel is a boat killer. To start with, ethanol is a solvent - this means it dissolves rings, seals, gaskets, hoses and even fiberglass fuel tanks. These dissolved solids can end up clogging fuel lines, carburetors and fuel injectors, which can result in poor performance, loss of power, stalling, and if not addressed, engine failure.

However, the biggest reason why ethanol fuel is bad for marine engines is that ethanol is hygroscopic, meaning it actually absorbs water from the moisture in the surrounding atmosphere. It's a known fact that water can cause serious issues in gasoline engines. Add this to the facts that an ounce of ethanol produces less energy than the same amount of gasoline and that ethanol fuel has a significantly shorter shelf life compared to non-ethanol fuel and the switch to ethanol fuel has made staying out on the water nothing short of a headache for recreational and commercial marine vehicle owners.

We are proud to introduce True Brand® Marine, an exciting new division of the Solid Start® family of performance and cleaning additives. Our fuel treatment is light years ahead of 98% of the marine fuel additives on the market today and has been proven to not only fight ethanol issues, but also reverse phase separation.

  • Fights Ethanol

The ethanol in your fuel actually ATTRACTS water molecules from the atmosphere. This can cause a wide variety of issues from decreased performance to seized and blown motors. True Brand Marine Fuel Treatment & Stabilizer is formulated to aggressively fights the effects of ethanol fuel in marine environments.

  • Advanced Water Removal

The unique chemistry of our product creates a hydrogen bridge that binds the water molecules and fuel molecules together to solubilize the water and remove it through the combustion process.

  • Lubricates & Cleans Injectors

The highly concentrated blend of detergents and cleaners lubricates while removing deposits from fuel system components such as injectors, intake valves, and combustion chambers. This helps provide easier starting, less stalling, smoother idling, and better throttle response.

WHY True Brand Marine?

... Simply put: We are problem solvers.

Solid Start is a second generation manufacturer of fuel, gear, hydraulic and engine treatments and performance additives. Since 1976, our products have been used in the phosphate, citrus, railroad, steel, coal, entertainment and automotive industries to enhance performance and improve engine life in everything from small engines to heavy equipment. In the mid 1980's, our focus shifted to the automotive aftermarket and, over the years, we have been fortunate enough to partner with and be the supplier of choice for companies such as Disney, Busch Gardens, Firestone, Goodyear, Jiffy Lube, Tires Plus, Tire Kingdom, Southeast Toyota U.S.A., Toyota of Japan, and Mazda of Japan.

We are located in central Florida, so it almost goes without saying that we LOVE being on the water - whether fishing, diving, skiing, wake boarding, tubing or riding personal watercraft. A few years ago, we personally witnessed how the introduction of ethanol into the mainstream fuel supply has increased maintenance costs and, in our case, caused complete failure of marine engine and fuel systems. Our boat suffered complete mechanical failure. We were told that ethanol played a major role in the degradation of the fuel system and that water in the fuel had caused the motor to hydro-lock. Upon teardown, we saw that the fuel had phase separated and documented a significant amount of water in the fuel tank.

This is actual fuel pumped from the gas tank of our boat.

Can we say phase separation?

You can clearly see the phase separation with the ethanol-water blend settled on the bottom.

This was a problem - and, after sharing our story, we realized that this was a large scale problem. We were told that there is no practical additive that can prevent phase separation from occurring or rejuvenate phase separated fuel. As a chemical manufacturer, we were in a unique position to make one. After three years of research, development, and testing, we are proud to introduce the newest Solid Start product and flagship of our new Marine Division, True Brand Marine.

How Does it Work?

The obstacle is the way...

Since ethanol is hygroscopic (meaning it absorbs water from the air), we started there. As ethanol naturally bonds with these water molecules (see illustration), the resulting compound is heavier than the gasoline the ethanol was originally blended in and sinks to the bottom of the fuel tank.

At this point, you have two distinct layers of fluid in the tank, gasoline on top and the water-ethanol blend on the bottom. This is what is known as phase separation. To add to the issue, the gasoline layer is now a lower octane due to the removal of the ethanol.

We have been able to design a formula that is able to bridge the gap and not only re-bind the ethanol to the gasoline, but also eliminate water through the combustion process.

Hydrogen Bridge Technology

Starting with the natural process of ethanol attracting water, we developed a seven ingredient formula, True Brand Marine Fuel Treatment and Stabilizer. Three of the seven ingredients remove water (and two of the three also clean). One is soluble in water. One is soluble in fuel. The third is soluble in both. The combination of the three creates a hydrogen bridge that binds the fuel to the ethanol, via the water molecules that are bound to the ethanol.

Bobby Lane

Bobby Lane is our local hometown hero. A Florida native, Bobby was born in Tampa and raised in Lakeland. He grew up in a fishing family, spending his time as a kid on the lakes around Kissimmee. "My father and grandfather were my fishing heroes," Bobby says. "No matter what, they always took me fishing. They gave me my love for the outdoors."

Bobby started fishing professionally in 2002, and moved to the FLW circuit in 2004, winning the Rookie of the Year award. In 2007, he stepped up to the Bassmaster Elite Series, and in his first season, he won their Rookie of the Year trophy and qualified for the Bassmaster Classic. In 2008, he backed up his first Elite year with a solid second, again qualifying for the Classic, and is set to fish his fourth in 2011. He's finished in the money in 24 out of 29 events, with seven top-ten finishes.

In 2009, Bobby reached one of his professional goals: a win on the Elite Series. On Kentucky Lake, he beat out past Classic champions and Angler of the Year winners to claim the Tennessee Triumph trophy. "That was the greatest moment of my career so far. But winning only makes you want to win again that much more."

When he's not on the water, Bobby likes to spend as much time as he can with his wife and kids. "Life on the road is tough," he says. "When I'm home, spending time with them is the most important thing."
